2025 Education Sessions

The Southern New England Energy Conference is first and foremost an education conference, not a tradeshow or expo (though we do have vendors and sponsors who support our conference).  The hallmark of our conference is our education offerings consisting of 12 unique breakout sessions not seen at any other industry conference or expo this year, two unique general sessions, and two keynotes.

We hope you will enjoy these sessions and find them useful!
Session Schedule Details

Thursday, September 25
9:00 am - 10:00 am
MEMA Board Meeting, ENTERPRISE ROOM

10:00 am - 11:00 am
Mass Clean Heat Standard Update -  Michael Ferrante, MEMA; Joe Uglietto, Diversified Energy Specialists
Consumer anger over high gas and electric rates this past winter to support climate change programs in Massachusetts has slowed the release of a Clean Heat Standard regulation aimed at reducing the amount of all fossil fuels used for space heating. But the regulation is still expected to emerge, and it will offer opportunities for clean, renewable Bioheat fuel and electric heat pumps. In this session you will learn why the regulation has not yet been released, the impact it will have on the heating oil and propane industry in Massachusetts, and business strategies retailers can implement to prepare for a Clean Heat Standard.

Recruitment Marketing: Fueling Your Workforce - David Heiser, PriMedia; Gerry Brien, Consumer Focus
If you’re like most in the industry, your company may be looking to hire one or more service technicians, installers, drivers, or office staff. In fact, at least 59% of U.S. energy companies have 1- 5 vacant positions to fill. That means being quick to the recruitment game—and playing it the right way—makes all the difference in onboarding new talent before your competition gets to them first.

Are you putting out the welcome mat for potential employees, or are you unknowingly putting up obstacles that make it more difficult for them to apply?

Hear from PriMedia on what it takes to reach and recruit your next star employee in the digital age — and in time to have them outperforming come winter.  Hear from Consumer focus on the pros and cons on hiring from technical high schools.

GENERAL SESSION: Canadian Energy and Trade Policies
Tariffs are dominating the national news, and how they affect one of America's major trading partners will profoundly affect us, especially for petroleum products.  Total trade with Canada amounted to about $429 billion through July of this year, about 13% of total US trade making Canada the US's second largest trading partner behind Mexico.  In this general session, you'll hear from a representative from the Canadian government who will update us on the current trade situation and impacts on energy supply.  Canada exported some $125 billion in petroleum products to the U.S. in 2024.  Canadian petroleum imports are particularly critical for New England.  - SALON III/IV

It’s not your BOS, it’s those &*#$%* Heat Pumps -  Danny Silverman, Angus Energy
When extreme cold hits, supplemental heating systems like heat pumps and pellet stoves are not designed to carry the demand dictated by lower-than-normal temperatures, driving up oil consumption, lowering K-factors, and increasing runouts. Many fuel dealers saw unexpected delivery spikes this past winter because traditional forecasting didn’t account for these failures. This session breaks down why K-factors drop, how to anticipate demand shifts, and what steps—like predictive analytics, customer education, and tank monitoring—can help you avoid costly surprises next winter.
